Emmy Awards 2017: Start time, live stream, and what to expect

The 69th annual Emmy Awards take place tonight at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. Emmy Awards 2017 Stephen Colbert is hosting for the first time ever, but there’s a lot more to know than just the venue and the host (this isn’t a dinner party, and you don’t need to bring a dish).

WHAT ARE THE EMMYS?

Hello! The Emmys, also known as the Primetime Emmy Awards, are held each year to recognize members of the TV industry. The first Emmy Awards ceremony took place in 1949, and it’s been going on ever since, to varying degrees of public and industry interest.

WHEN ARE THE EMMYS?

The Emmys will begin tonight, September 17th, at 8PM ET. (The pre-show red carpet coverage will begin much earlier than that: 4:30PM ET). The awards ceremony usually runs until about 11PM at a minimum, but I seem to recall slumping over on my couch after midnight for the past few years.

HOW CAN I WATCH?

The Emmys will air on CBS this year. That means you can watch on linear TV or on CBS’s streaming service, CBS All Access. The network is currently offering a free trial of All Access for first-time users, otherwise it’s $5.99 per month. CBS also tells The Verge you’ll be able to log in on a browser with a cable subscription or watch on YouTube TV. Emmy Awards 2017

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

This year is a big year for streaming services. Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu have picked up a collective 125 nominations, with shows like The Handmaid’s TaleStranger Things, and Transparent up for awards. And as the streaming wars heat up, prestige TV and awards have become just as important to streaming services as they are to traditional networks. Might as well watch to see who comes out on top. And, of course, who doesn’t.

Everything you need to know about tonight’s Emmy Awards

we’re living in an era of Peak TV, then tonight’s Emmy Awards show promises to be a trip to the summit. With a nominations list packed with talent, including for “Big Little Lies,” “Feud” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” we’re predicting that it could be a banner year for stories about women. The gold has already started rolling in thanks to last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies, which awarded Ava DuVernay’s Netflix documentary “The 13th” four trophies. Emmy Awards 2017

More than  5,000 gold-colored, paper tubes (ranging in length from 2 to 20 feet) have been suspended from the ceiling at the Los Angeles Convention Center to channel the look of “Golden Grandeur.”

That is the theme the creators of the annual post-Emmy Awards extravaganza the Governors Ball are hoping to evoke as they host guests of the show, nominees, presenters and plenty of winners posing for pictures of themselves planting a kiss on their trophy.

Last year’s Governors Ball transformed the space into a magical forest wonderland (with the occasional sponsored car parked between the whimsical branches). This year it’s all about the gold. Emmy Awards 2017

Event producer Cheryl Cecchetto explained to The Times that the “epic look” of the venue “is going to make everyone feel so important.”

Fifty bartenders, 250 cooks, 27 executive restaurant chefs and 600 servers will converge to offer the celebrants heirloom tomatoes, filet mignon and brownie bars. Emmy Awards 2017

However, the splendor has a green bent: All the decor elements from the party is either recyclable, repurposed or biodegradable.

What time are the Emmy Awards?

TV’s biggest night is nearly here and we know you’ve got a few questions.

The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on CBS at 5 p.m. Pacific time until about 8 p.m.

“The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert will run point during the ceremony as this year’s host while the Television Academy doles out awards for best drama, comedy, limited series and TV movie, in addition to awarding the top talent from said categories.

While many of the gilded statuettes were handed out during last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys, there are still quite a few to be had on Sunday. For more details about Sunday’s show, click here.
